Site Assessments &
Remediation Project Examples
Petroleum Terminal Redevelopment
Port Washington, NY
Client: Champion Energy and
Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.
Description: Champion Energy
Corporation hired Triton in 1997 to assist them as they began to divest
themselves of numerous properties located throughout Connecticut and
New York. These properties (including the Port Washington, NY
site) were active bulk petroleum terminals, many of which were
strategic waterfront sites. Champion’s objective was to
capitalize on the high value of these waterfront properties by
preparing them for sale and redevelopment. Triton was intimately
involved with the environmental provisions of contract negotiations,
comprehensive environmental assessments, facility demolition, and
complete remediation of these properties.
Role: Conducted environmental
site assessments, soil and groundwater investigation, decommissioning
and dismantling of petroleum storage and distribution equipment,
demolition of structures, public outreach presentations and remediation
of site to NYDEC standards. The principal source areas were
excavated or remediated using a combination of an air sparging/soil
vapor extraction (AS/VE) system, and enhanced bioremediation. The
residual dissolved-phase impacts to groundwater were monitored.
In order to fully evaluate remaining impacts to groundwater, Triton
conducted an Exposure Assessment in accordance with NYDEC
guidelines. The NYDEC recently issued a “No Further Action”
letter for the site, providing closure to this successful project.
